Data Platform Engineer (Presto)

About the role 

Join BFS Data Platforms engineering team and play a key role to aid in accessibility of BFS core data asset from a wide range of data sources and make it available for reporting and analytics use cases efficiently.   

Essential Skills and Experience  

  • Strong experience in python, shell / scripting, orchestration and automation of cloud formation applications, platforms and environments and an enthusiasm to learn and use a wide variety of new tools and methods 
  • Significant experience with AWS, cloud formation and linux / unix  
  • Strong SQL and query optimisation experience 
  • Advance knowledge of data processing and big data querying tools such as Presto or Trino. Candidate must demonstrate proven experience in: 
  • Executing Presto upgrade in a large distributed system and regression testing 
  • Analyse system performance metrics and propose configuration tuning to optimise user experience and establish scaling guidelines 
  • Investigate auto-scaling to balance user experience and cloud costs 
  • Support users to troubleshoot query failures and root cause analysis 
  • Revamp Presto cluster operations - establish essential cluster monitoring and alerts, create and implement patch strategy and cadence 
  • Contribute to ongoing core Trino/Presto development 
  • The ability to work both within your scrum and as a service provider for multiple other teams 
  • Experience working in a DevOps model in an Agile environment  


Desirable Skills and Experience  

  • Data scheduling and orchestration tools like Control M, Oozie, Airflow   
  • Expertise in DevOps tools like Maven, Bamboo, JIRA, Ansible, GIT (stash or bitbucket), Nexus, SVN Spark 
  • Experience defining and uplifting the standard and consistency of developed code and patterns  
  • Prior working experience with AWS - any or all of EC2, S3, EBS, ELB, RDS, EMR, Apache Parquet Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift
